Federal Pell Grant

This is not a loan. You do not have to repay this grant.

  • For undergraduate students
  • May not have earned a bachelor's or professional degree
  • Determined by Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Full or part-time student status affects award amount
  • Now limited to the equivalent of six years (12 trimesters)

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

This is not a loan. You do not have to repay this grant. If you are awarded a Federal Pell Grant and demonstrate the lowest Exceptional Financial Need, you will be considered first.

Student Employment Program

Need additional money for educational expenses? This program encourages work related to community service or your course of study. You earn these funds as you go. They are not available to pay for tuition, housing and other charges due at the beginning of each term.

  • For undergraduate and graduate students
  • On and off campus opportunities
  • Average 5 to 10 hours per week
  • Covers smaller expenses throughout term

Veterans Education Benefits

Many forms of Military benefits are accepted on all three of Palmer's Campuses.  Please contact the Student Administrative Service's Office on your campus with questions about the acceptance of your VA Education Benefits.

Loans

Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan

You must demonstrate financial need and meet other specific eligibility requirements.

  • For undergraduate students only
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time
  • 0% interest while enrolled at least half-time
  • 4.66% fixed interest rate during repayment
  • 6-month grace period before repayment begins

For new loans made between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2015, students must repay interest that accrues during the sixth-month grace period. During authorized periods of deferment, no interest is charged. New Doctor of Chiropractic students are no longer eligible for this type of loan.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan

You do not need to demonstrate financial need for this loan. However, you must meet specific eligibility requirements.

  • Interest is charged throughout the life of the loan
  • Current interest rate is fixed at 6.21% for Graduate (DC) & 4.66% for Undergraduate (BS or ASCT) students
  • Choose to pay interest on loan as you go  OR
  • Choose to add interest to the loan principal

Federal Perkins Loan

You need to demonstrate financial need via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  

  • Interest is fixed at 5%
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time
  • Hurry! Funds are limited
  • April 30 is priority application date
  • 9-month grace period before repayment begins

Loans with Special Applications

Federal Graduate PLUS Loan for Graduate Students (Grad PLUS)

You do not need to demonstrate financial need. The annual limit is equal to the student's cost of attendance, as defined by Palmer College of Chiropractic, minus any other financial aid received.

  • For Doctor of Chiropractic students only who must be enrolled at least half-time
  • Current interest rate is fixed at 7.21%
  • Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application first
  • Complete Federal PLUS Application
  • Successful credit check required

Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

You do not need to demonstrate financial need. This loan is for a parent borrower. A parent is currently defined as a person's natural or adoptive mother or father, step-parent or legal guardian. An annual limit is determined, and is equal to the student's cost of attendance, as defined by Palmer College of Chiropractic, minus any other financial aid the student is receiving.

  • Dependent student must attend college at least half-time
  • Current interest rate is fixed at 7.21%
  • Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application first
  • Parents complete Federal PLUS Application
  • Successful credit check required

Alternative Loans

These are private (non-federal) loans. These loans require special applications. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application does not apply here.

The terms vary widely. So do eligibility criteria. Keep in mind that usually your best option is to pursue federal loans. Be sure you have applied for all of the federal loans you are eligible for before you consider private loans.
