Procedures | Back to Policy index

Before a new, an independent study or special topics course may be offered, the responsible program director must recommend that course to the Graduate Council, based upon a review of course content in a tentative syllabus. The Graduate Council may approve the proposed course for graduate credit, based upon this recommendation and its own determination that the offering is at a level commensurate with graduate instruction.

A tentative syllabus must contain sufficient information for review (title, credits, objectives, and evaluation standards) by the program director and Graduate Council, but is exempt from the standards for syllabi (see Policy 10 Course Syllabi). If approved for graduate credit, the tentative syllabus must be made to conform to the policy for established course syllabi (Policy 10).

Procedures:

Notice: None.

Petition: A letter proposing a new course for graduate credit (including independent study and special topics courses) must be submitted to the appropriate program director. The letter should provide the rationale for or benefits in offering this course. A tentative syllabus describing the course, its objectives, method of instruction and assessment, and, where possible resources to be used, must be attached. This letter should be submitted at least one month proceeding pre-registration for the term in which the intended course is to begin.

If in the director approved the content, as being appropriate to the specific graduate program, the proposal will be forwarded to the Graduate Council for final consideration. At a called meeting, the Graduate Council will consider the petition and the faculty member proposing the course may be invited to the meeting, to address the request. If approved the course may be added to the roster of courses for the next term and to the next revision of the Graduate Catalog – if appropriate.

Remediation: None.

* A Graduate Advisory Committee or, in the absence of such a committee, a designated advisor.
