Graduate study may be interrupted for a continuous period up to 3 years for relevant academic endeavors, military service, illness or a death in the family, with the approval of the Graduate Council.

Procedures:

Notice: None.

Petition: A letter requesting a Leave of Absence must be submitted to the Graduate Council. Letters should be submitted one month proceeding the term in which the leave is intended to begin, where possible. The letter must indicate the purpose of the leave, the start date and projected end date for the leave of absence and should provide sufficient grounds and any necessary documentation to assure effective review. Where possible, the petition should bear the endorsement of the student’s advisory committee.* At a called meeting, the Graduate Council will consider the petition and the student will be invited to the meeting, to address the request, where appropriate.

Remediation: None.

* A Graduate Advisory Committee or, in the absence of such a committee, a designated advisor.
