Clinics

The mission of the Palmer Chiropractic Clinics is to graduate chiropractors who become successful practitioners and lifelong learners, possessing relationship-centered, highly developed interpersonal communication skills and an appreciation of the public's need for ethical and empowering relationship-centered practice. By demonstrating their clinical competence, compassionate attitudes and service-oriented behaviors, Palmer graduates become engaged in leadership roles and work toward shaping the future direction of the chiropractic profession.

The Clinic system is composed of three clinics: an outpatient clinic that provides fee-for-service care; an outreach clinic that offers care at no cost to people who meet financial-need requirements; and a Campus Health Center, where students receive chiropractic care. Students have opportunities to provide care to faculty clinicians' patients at all clinic locations.

Educationally, the clinical experience is based on a three-level progressive system. Level I occurs during the student's assignment to the Campus Health Center. During the Level I experience, students are introduced to the clinical setting as they practice clinical skills and patient education procedures on students and students' family members. There is a great deal of interaction between faculty clinicians and students in the Campus Health Center, providing students with opportunities to develop their clinical skills and understanding before advancing to Level II.

The Level II experience provides students with opportunities for development of their clinical skills and understanding with increased emphasis on clinical decision-making, communication skills, patient education, and development of professional and ethical doctor-patient relationships. Students are included as part of the health care team, working in collaboration with faculty clinicians and staff. The Level II experience takes place in the outpatient and outreach clinics.

An off-campus program, the Level III Intern Preceptorship Program, provides opportunities for students to be assigned to a chiropractor in private practice. Preceptorship opportunities are available throughout the United States and in some international locations.

Palmer Health Sciences Library

The heart of any learning community is its library. The Palmer Health Sciences Library Florida is no exception to this rule with its focused collections, range of services and dedicated, user-oriented faculty and staff.

Open 72 hours a week when the College is in session, the library provides information access in a variety of formats, including: video, audio, DVD and CD ROM materials, anatomical models and charts, circulating, reserve and reference monographs, current paper and online journal subscriptions, bound retrospective journal titles and wireless access to more than 60 online bibliographic databases to support the college's mastery and inquiry-based curriculum program.

In addition to the circulating and reserve access services, library faculty and staff provide instructional and information research services, inter-library loan, fax and document delivery services and mediated online literature searches.

Palmer Florida’s Library participates with a number of local, state and national library networks and consortia that expand student access to resources and cooperative services. These networks include the Chiropractic Libraries Consortium, the Atlantic/Southeast Regional Library Network of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine of the National Library of Medicine, the Tampa Bay Medical Library Network and the Central Florida Library Cooperative.

Research

Palmer College of Chiropractic recognizes that chiropractic is an applied science, subject to and guided by the results of scientific research. Palmer’s mission includes the responsibility to encourage research. Faculty at all Palmer campuses are required to engage in scholarly activity as an integral part of their commitment to excellence in teaching. Students may gain valuable experience by participating in research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Promising students are encouraged to pursue additional educational opportunities and may receive assistance with scholarship applications.

Established in 1995, the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) is the largest and most highly funded research effort in the chiropractic educational community. The PCCR encompasses, administers and coordinates scholarly research efforts at all three Palmer campuses, with the main headquarters and laboratory facilities in Davenport, Iowa. Research at PCCR is organized into the following programs: Biomechanics and Neuroscience, Clinical Trials and Outcomes, Health Services, Educational Programs, and Chiropractic Technique and Technology Assessment. Research projects are supported by the PCCR Office of Data Management and Biostatistics.

PCCR received funding from NCCAM of the NIH to begin a collaborative research program with National University of Health Sciences, Kansas State University, SUNY at Stony Brook and the University of Iowa to establish a Center for the Study of Mechanisms and Effects of Chiropractic Manipulations. Its aim is to further insight into the spinal adjustment and its physiological mechanisms. The Center is facilitating four research projects supported by the Data Management, Biostatistics, Biomechanics and Administration cores.
