The following are examples of bibliographic citations for various print sources using Chicago style. All citations should be DOUBLE SPACED, with every line after the first INDENTED.

Encyclopedia: Signed

Chicago style states that well-known reference books are rarely listed in a bibliography. A parenthetical reference in the text is sufficient. If it must be cited, use the following format:

Article in a Newspaper

Chicago style states that items from daily newspapers are rarely listed in a bibliography. A parenthetical reference in the text is sufficient if the article is cited once or twice. If it must be cited, use the following format:

If the newspaper or several of its issues are used frequently, note only the newspaper name plus the dates. If the paper is online, simply add the URL at the end of the citation.

Citing using the Chicago style

Using this system, references are numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text. For example:

...as the authors said "the darkest days were still ahead"1.

... this has been well documented2.

The author's name can also be integrated into the text eg.

Rockland3 has argued that...
