Palmer Florida Library Services

Like comprehensive libraries worldwide, the Palmer Florida Library offers several services that are designed to assist students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Port Orange-Daytona community. Below are details about the services available.

Acquisitions Services

The Acquisitions Department is responsible for ordering books, audio-visual and multimedia materials for the library's various collections. Our primary book vendor is Majors Scientific Books, Inc., and we subscribe to the "Weekly New Book Receipts for the Health Sciences Librarian."  Materials are chosen in accordance with PFL's Collection Development Policy. Suggestions for additions to the collections may be sent to the Library in care of Eileen Burg.

Alumni Services

Palmer Health Sciences Library offers many services to Palmer Alumni including literature searches, document delivery, and other reference services. For more information on alumni services, please call the Reference desk at (563) 884-5896 or visit: Alumni Services.

Audio-Visual Services

The Library maintains a large audio-visual room with video players/monitors and slide projector/screens for viewing the programs in its collection. The room is available anytime the library is open on a first-come, first-serve basis. The room may also be used for group study when it is not being used for viewing audio-visual software.

Cataloging and Processing Services

Cataloging and Processing are responsible for the organization of materials within the Library. All monographs, periodicals and audiovisuals acquired by PFL are cataloged according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second revised edition, and are classed according to the Library of Congress (LC) Classification Schedules. They are arranged on the shelves within the various collections in order by their assigned classification numbers. Any item found in the local system with a status of "In Cataloging" has not been completely cataloged or processed and may not yet be found out in the stacks.

Circulation Services

The basic circulation period of library materials for library patrons is two weeks and requires your valid Palmer identification card. The circulation period varies based on patron user status. Library materials that circulate include books and some audio-visual items. Materials may be checked out from the Circulation Desk: 386-763-2670.

Citizens of the Port Orange-Daytona community may also check out library materials from the collection. Patrons must have either a valid college identification (ID) card from a Port Orange-Daytona area college or an Volusia County Library System affiliated library card to check out materials.

Copying Services

A photocopy and delivery service is available for materials that are subscribed by Palmer Health Science Library. Fees for this service are $4.00 per request only for on-campus Palmer faculty. Orders may be sent to Eileen Burg (386) 763-2671.

Document Delivery Services

Document Delivery is available only to off-campus, Palmer alumni and other health care providers. The cost of service is $12/article plus copyright royalties for Palmer Alumni, for everyone else it is $15/article plus copyright royalties. Document Delivery requests may be placed by phone (386) 763-2670 or e-mail. If requested materials are on the shelf, typically they are mailed the next working day. If a rush delivery is necessary, it may be faxed within the day for an extra charge of $1.00 per page.

Interlibrary Loan Services

Books and journal articles not held by Palmer Health Sciences Libraries may be requested through Interlibrary Loan. The service fee for Faculty and students is $2.00 per article and book requests are free. Interlibrary Loan requires at least two weeks for obtaining borrowed materials. If you need assistance obtaining materials through Interlibrary Loan, please contact Eileen Burg or telephone the Library desk, 386-763-2670.

Reference Services
