Library Collections

PHSL's Collections are searchable through its internet accessible online catalog

Audio Visual Collection

The Audiovisual Collection includes any media other than print media. Items in this collection are subdivided by media type. Within the media type, they are arranged on the shelves by their LC classification numbers. There are audiotape programs, videotape programs, slide programs, biological models and specimens.

Audiovisual items are assigned a collection code of Non-Circulating AV (NAV) or Circulating AV (AV). These codes appear in the call number field of the Bibliographic Detail display when doing a search in the local system. Circulating AV items may be checked out of the library or checked out to another library through the Interlibrary Loan service.

Circulating Collection

Palmer Health Sciences Library's Circulating Collection is continually developed primarily for its students, faculty and staff. The collection is the most comprehensive on-campus chiropractic and health sciences collection in the chiropractic profession.  The collection focuses upon all aspects of chiropractic. There is a strong collection in anatomy, osteology, neurology, physiology and other basic sciences disciplines.

Journal Collection

Palmer Health Sciences Library maintains more than 650 active chiropractic and biomedical serial title subscriptions with about 15,000 bound volumes. The Library's journals holdings is one of the most comprehensive collections of chiropractic journals in the world with titles dating back to 1890s. Like the book collection, the journals collection focuses upon all aspects of chiropractic. There is a strong fundamental collection of journals in anatomy, osteology, neurology, physiology and other basic sciences disciplines. The library also provides access to several full-text electronic journals

McNaughton Leisure Reading Collection

PHSL's McNaughton Recreational Reading Collection is essentially a "public library" collection of current popular works. This service is exclusively for PCC staff, faculty and students. New and up-to-date book releases may be checked out for two week loan periods. These titles include fiction such as bestsellers, romances, mysteries and science fiction. The initial collection contains about 400 volumes, with up to 20 new titles to be added each month.

netLibrary eBook Shared Collection

PHSL has purchased access to a Shared Collection to over 9,000 electronic book titles, plus access to additional thousands of free electronic book titles, housed on the netLibrary server.

Reference Collection

The Library maintains a separate Reference Collection of books that are to be used in-house and do not circulate outside the Library. These are books that librarians and library patrons frequently consult to answer a wide range of questions. Examples of these types of Reference books include: atlases, bibliographies, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, indexes and many of the clinical sciences classic textbooks.  For a list of electronic reference materials, including full-text resources, visit theElectronic Databases page.

Reserves Collection

The Reserves Collection in the Library houses materials requested by either the faculty for specific curriculum work or materials Palmer student clubs with faculty advisers have placed. The Library Reserve Collection may also include materials selected by  Library faculty because of high internal use.  Faculty interested in placing items on Reserve, click here.
