HSPRP Program

Health Services & Policy Research Program (HSPRP)

Current projects include:

  • Compilation Project(s): Reviewing, indexing, and facilitating user-friendly research access to chiropractic data contained in large-scale public-use databases of federally funded health surveys, such as Health Interview Survey (HIS); National Health and Nutrition Exam Survey (NHANES); Longitudinal Study on Aging (LSOA); National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES); Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS); and Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS). These projects support development of chiropractic health services research infrastructure by enhancing capacity of chiropractic research community to conduct cost-efficient secondary analyses of existing data. • Chiropractic Workforce and Underserved Areas Project(s): Map distribution of current chiropractic practices relative to federally designated primary care shortage areas. Survey and interview chiropractors to explore current and potential role of chiropractic providers within the health care delivery system. Survey chiropractic students to map future trends in migration. Examine delivery of chiropractic care through the Palmer Clinic Abroad Outreach Mission Program.

  • Primary Care Project(s): Comprehensive literature review and feasibility study of prevalence of chest pain presentations in chiropractic teaching clinics. Survey and interview chiropractors to assess primary care-related practice attributes. Survey chiropractic students on primary care knowledge and beliefs.

Projects in development include:

  • Examination of methodological issues connected with the operation of valid and reliable "episodes-of-care" in studies of utilization.
  • Establishment of a centralized electronic data repository of existing data on international chiropractic practice, training and education, to facilitate the conduct of international health services research (infrastructure development). Primary data collection (surveys) on international chiropractic education, training and practice.
  • Establishment of a Chiropractic Health Policy Studies Center to provide profession support functions including an information clearinghouse, health policy assistance, and training in health policy analysis.
