Discipline of Physiology (LB)

Physiology considers the normal vital processes of the human organism. Courses present physiology as an integrated study of the body’s functional systems. Physical and chemical principles of the human body are brought into the chiropractic student’s realm of understanding.

As most disease conditions result from abnormal function of one or more control systems, special emphasis is given to those systems governing homeostasis. A basic understanding of normal control mechanisms is mandatory before the student begins study of human pathologic states.

LB 111

Fundamentals of Physiology

(4 lecture hrs. & 1 lab hr. per week)

Co-requisite
: LA 112.

Physiology and functional anatomy of the cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems, and their regulation by the nervous and endocrine systems; special senses; muscle and bone physiology. Physiology laboratory.

LB 131

Gastrointestinal and Renal Physiology

(4 lecture hrs. per week)

Prerequisites: LA 121, LB 111.

Gastrointestinal and renal systems, including: control of gastrointestinal motility and secretion; digestion, absorption, transport and storage of nutrients; metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins; metabolic functions of the liver and biliary systems; energetics and metabolic rates; body temperature regulation; importance of the kidneys in maintaining homeostasis; factors regulating acid-base balance and body fluids.

LB 211

Cardiac and Pulmonary Physiology

(6 lecture hrs. per week)

Prerequisites: LA 121, LB 111.

Cardiac and respiratory systems, including: regulatory mechanisms and functional anatomy; emphasis on the control mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis.

LB 212

Endocrine and Reproductive Physiology

(4 lecture hrs. per week)

Prerequisites: LA 121, LB 111.

Physiology and functional anatomy of the endocrine and reproductive systems, including: chemistry, mechanism of action and physiological effects of hormones: pituitary, hypothalamic, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreatic, gonadal and placental; synergistic effects of hormones; feedback control systems; abnormalities of hormonal secretion; male and female reproductive functions; pregnancy and lactation.
