Student Services

Student Orientation

Prior to the beginning of each academic term, the College conducts a new-student orientation for the incoming class. The program features presentations by Palmer West faculty, staff and students regarding College goals, policies and procedures, campus life, College clubs and extracurricular activities. All new students are required to attend.

Housing

Palmer West does not maintain on-campus residence facilities. To assist students in acquiring adequate housing, the Admissions Department publishes a comprehensive housing guidebook. The Guidebook lists apartment complexes in the immediate vicinity of the Palmer West campus, as well as those complexes located in neighborhoods accessible by the 28-mile Santa Clara County Light Rail System. The department also publishes a Housing Opportunities Bulletin. It lists various rental opportunities in the South Bay area, assists students in identifying possible roommate opportunities and provides students with other housing guides and reference materials. Incoming students from outside the Bay Area should plan to arrive in the area in advance of Orientation Day to ensure that suitable housing can be found before the beginning of classes.

Books And Supplies

The College Bookstore, which is open weekdays during school hours, stocks required texts and instruments. Every effort is extended to secure instructional materials at the lowest possible cost to the students. Students should expect to pay approximately $600 for required books and instructional materials per quarter. See the Student Handbook for more specific information, including hours of operation.

Parking

Palmer West students, faculty and staff may park their vehicles in any of the on-campus or street parking spaces (authorized by the City of San Jose) on a first-come, first-served basis, unless the space has been identified for a specific group or individual. All students are responsible for reviewing the rules and regulations which govern parking at Palmer West. The complete parking policy is published in the Palmer West Student Handbook, which is presented to all new students at orientation. Parking rules and regulations are strictly enforced, and citations will be issued. Students are required to register all their motor vehicles during registration for classes each quarter.

Mailboxes

Individual mailboxes are assigned to all incoming students. Assignments are made through Student Affairs. Students are encouraged to check their mailboxes at least once a day for mail and official school notices. Phone and personal messages are placed on the message board near the Cafeteria entrance. From time to time, mailboxes must be cleaned out for maintenance and changing of combinations. The College assumes no responsibility for articles lost, stolen or damaged while in mailboxes.

Advising

Palmer West provides the following types of advising services for PCCW students and their families:

Academic Advising
Academic advising is a faculty function. Faculty members are available to discuss their courses and other academic concerns with students on an individual basis.

General Advising
The Dean of Student Academic Affairs serves as class adviser as students progress through the program. Advice is also available about appropriate outside resources and agencies in the area to assist with drug and alcohol abuse and dependency, dealing with family and/or marital pressures, etc.

International Advising
International students may obtain information about their status, optional practical training and other immigration concerns from the Dean of Student Academic Affairs.

Peer Tutoring
Palmer West maintains a Peer Tutoring program for those students who request additional academic counseling assistance in one-on-one or small-group formats. The Peer Tutoring program, provided at no charge to the students, is coordinated through the Student Affairs Office. Copies of the Peer Tutoring policy and participation procedures are available in the Student Affairs Office. Students who are interested in working as a tutor may stop by Student Affairs to acquire appropriate application forms and review eligibility criteria.

Mentor Program
The PCCW Mentor Program pairs an upper-quarter volunteer with each new entering student. The goal of the program is to provide a friendly colleague who will ease the new student’s adjustment to the academic and social life of the College and point them toward various on- and off-campus resources that will help with their successful transition to PCCW and the surrounding community.

Palmer West fields an intercollegiate ice hockey team as well as a soccer team which competes in a local adult recreation league.

There are several professional student associations on campus, including student chapters of the American Chiropractic Association, International Chiropractors Association and California Chiropractic Association, as well as a number of other clubs that serve as informational forums. Contact the Student Affairs Office for more information
