Injury Prevention Programs

All businesses are concerned about how they spend money. Controlling costs can make the difference between success and failure. In fact, every company in California, regardless of size or industry, is required by law to implement and maintain a job-specific injury prevention program. Many companies, however, have neither the resources nor personnel to satisfy these requirements.

The Palmer College of Chiropractic West Clinics, an emerging leader in the area of injury prevention and physical conditioning, has a solution: Palmer Injury Prevention Programs. This series of workshops, conducted on-site and at no charge to the host company by student members of the College's Student Patient Education Awareness and Knowledge (SPEAK), are designed to reduce the risk and associated health care costs of work-related injuries by developing a safety culture in our client corporations.

Back, neck, shoulder, wrist, hand or other neuromuscular injuries can be caused by a direct trauma related to heavy physical work, static work posture, frequent bending and twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling and other types of repetitive work. According to the National Safety Council's Accidents Fact Sheet, sprain and Strain-type injuries account for more than 50 percent of all work-related injury claims. Further, 80 percent of all back pain, referred to as garden variety, is the result of poor flexibility and strength. Palmer College West Chiropractic Clinics have developed several prevention programs to educate, train and motivate employees on the prevention of back and neck sprain/strain injuries, and repetitive motion-type injuries, as well as to encourage development of healthier lifestyles.

Available Injury & Prevention Programs:

  • Stretching and Flexibility Exercise Program (SAFE). This program is designed to decrease risk of work-related musculoskeletal injuries by providing employees with simple exercises that can significantly reduce the risk of injury and better prepare the worker to perform his/her job.
  • Save-A-Back Program. Employees learn how to maintain proper body ergonomics and break the pattern of poor work habits that often lead to injury.
  • Ergo Office Program. Palmer West's Injury Prevention team will conduct a comprehensive assessment and educational program focused on the prevention of cumulative trauma disorders.
  • Health & Wellness Programs. These workshops provide how-to steps to work toward healthier lifestyles and behavioral changes related to a variety of topics, including chiropractic, weight management, nutrition and diet, fitness and exercise and smoking cessation.

Student Patient Education Awareness and Knowledge (SPEAK)

Planning a health fair or just interested in having an informative and enlightening health-care presentation for your company, school or civic group? Another example of Palmer College West's commitment to helping the South Bay feel its best is the College's Student Patient Education Awareness and Knowledge (SPEAK) organization. Palmer College West students, who have earned SPEAK certification by demonstrating skill and knowledge through a series of public-speaking exercises, are available to address a wide range of subjects, at no cost to the host or sponsoring organization, including:

  • sports chiropractic
  • chiropractic benefits for older patients
  • posture
  • exercise
  • wellness
  • strength training
  • stretching
  • nutrition

Sports Council

More and more athletes of varied skill levels, ranging from professional sports to the recreational weekend warriors are utilizing chiropractic care as a means to reduce the risk of injury, enhance their performance and fulfill their athletic potential. Palmer College West has developed a significant profile as one of the major players within the sports chiropractic community, due in large part to the College's Sports Council program.

Palmer West's Sports Council, one of the College's most active extracurricular organizations with more than 200 members, provides our students the opportunity to develop practical on-the-field skills by assisting with sports-care services for athletes at a variety of events including:

  • Junior National Olympics
  • Santa Clara International Swim Meet
  • National Aerobic Championships
  • Northern California Corporate Games
  • Palmer West ice hockey games
  • bicycling, rowing, rugby, running races and competitions

Each Sports Council member who participates in on-field activities is CPR-certified (Palmer West students are certified in their third quarter Emergency Procedures Class) and has completed the College's Sports Chiropractic elective offered at the beginning of sixth quarter. In addition to demonstration of various sport specific soft-tissue procedures, the Sports Chiropractic elective also features a presentation on the appropriate protocol for communicating with athletes and sports-care staff during the event or competition. On-field care provided by Sports Council members includes manipulation, soft-tissue massage and stretching. All care is supervised by a member of the College's clinical faculty. Only the supervising doctor may perform chiropractic adjustments.
