Legal Issues—2 credits
Prerequisites: None
Co-requisite with: CBPM137, CLIN139
Prerequisites for: CLIN139
Students will receive a general background in legal basics for practice, with emphasis on risk management strategies, ethics and practice liability, in order to be more proactive in their practices. This course will present the principles of law, basics of contract and tort law, legal forms of practice, compliance with regulatory agencies (OSHA and ADA) and child/adult abuse reporting. This course will also involve a discussion of the basics of staff relationships, as well as principles involved in hiring, training and motivating employees, as well as a review of the relevant employment laws.

Regulatory Issues—2 credits
Prerequisites: CLIN805
Co-requisite with: CLIN817
This course addresses the application and correlation of topics presented in all previous courses. Patient management skills are emphasized. Focus will be on the areas of HIV/AIDS, OSHA, sexual harassment prevention/boundaries, child abuse reporting and communicable disease reporting.

Introduction to Clinical Practice—2 credits
Prerequisite: CBPM132
Prerequisite for: CBPM135, CLIN805, CLIN806
Co-requisite with: CBPM134
Based on the “Palmer Pyramid,” students will learn how to set up and give a patient education program to patients. The student will focus on their interactive role in the continuing relationships with patients. Emphasis will be placed on the report of findings, which is critical to patient understanding and involvement in their care. Students will learn the importance of effective communication skills and practice speaking in public and in one-on-one situations in order to enhance their patient education skills. Further emphasis will be given regarding record documentation.

Clinical Methods—5 credits
Prerequisites: All courses in trimesters 1-6
Prerequisite for: CLIN816, CLIN820
Co-requisite with: CLIN806
The course introduces the student to patient care through care of a student reciprocal patient, with gradual responsibility for care of additional students, student family members, Palmer alumni and Palmer employees. It integrates information obtained from the patient history, physical examination, laboratory tests, radiographic studies and chiropractic analysis to result in a working diagnosis and appropriate record keeping. Students provide care for patients under the supervision of the faculty clinicians in the Campus Health Center.

Emergency Procedures—3 credits
Prerequisites: All courses in trimesters 1-6
Prerequisite for: CLIN816, CLIN820
Co-requisite with: CLIN805
The course covers basic procedures used in an emergency situation. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be certified by the American Red Cross in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

CLIN815 92
Clinic III—19 credits
Prerequisites: CLIN817, DIAG716
Students continue in their development of clinical competency through continued care of patients in a Palmer Clinic outpatient facility or at a chiropractic field doctor’s office through the Intern Preceptorship Program, an optional program for qualified students. Students continue to be assessed daily by faculty clinicians or are evaluated by preceptor field doctors. Additional programs offered for Clinic III students include the Clinical Teaching Assistant and Residency Assistant Programs.

Clinic I—14 credits
Prerequisites: All courses in trimesters 1-7
Prerequisite for: CLIN817
Co-requisite with: CLIN820
Students continue in their development of clinical competency through patient care in the Campus Health Center. Upon recommendation of the Campus Health Center faculty plus other requirements, students transfer to the Palmer Clinic outpatient care facility where they assume responsibility for outpatients assigned to faculty clinicians. Patient care takes place under the supervision and direction of the faculty clinicians who assess the student’s clinical competency on a continual basis.

Clinic II—14 credits
Prerequisites: CLIN816
Prerequisite for: CLIN815
Co-requisite with CLIN821
Students continue in their development of clinical competency through continued care of patients in Palmer Clinic outpatient facilities. In addition to the daily assessment by faculty clinicians, the student will take a Proficiency Examination toward the end of the trimester, using an OSCE, station-type method of testing.

Clinical Case Correlation I—3 credits
Prerequisites: All courses in trimesters 1-7
Prerequisite for: CLIN821
Co-requisite with: CLIN816
During the first half of the trimester, students choose among a variety of presentations grouped into theme weeks. Theme weeks are based on a variety of disciplines or specialties such as chiropractic pediatrics, chiropractic radiology and so forth. The latter half of the trimester involves presentations of health care classes and critiques of peers’ presentations.

Clinical Case Correlation II—3 credits
Prerequisites: CLIN820, CBPM135
Prerequisite for: CLIN822
Co-requisite with: CLIN817
The course follows the same format as that of Clinical Case Correlation I during the first half of the trimester, thereby providing students additional opportunities to attend theme presentations. Specific projects related to marketing, finance and legal aspects of practice are completed and assessed during the latter half of the trimester.

Clinical Case Correlation III—6 credits
Prerequisite: CLIN821
Co-requisite with: CLIN815
This course provides a capstone experience for the student’s educational experience. Designed to provide integration of subject matter attained throughout the curriculum, the student has an opportunity to interact with previous instructors from basic sciences, chiropractic and clinical divisions as well as administrative personnel. Through instructor presentations, student presentations and interactive dialogue, students will reflect on their chiropractic education and their future practice expectations and have an opportunity to have questions addressed.
