Academic Disciplines

Palmer College of Chiropractic teaches chiropractic as a complete health care system -- philosophy, art and science. The essence of its philosophy was first articulated by the founder of chiropractic and our College, D.D. Palmer.

Simply stated, Palmer's philosophy is that there is an innate power within us. By reducing stress, healthy eating, frequent exercise and spinal adjustments necessary to eliminate nerve disturbance, the body has the ability to maintain itself. Palmer College teaches philosophy as an intrinsic part of its curriculum.

Scientific knowledge of chiropractic has increased dramatically since D.D. Palmer's day and likely will continue at an even faster rate, thanks to Palmer College's emphasis on research. Research is thoroughly integrated into the courses at Palmer. Palmer College emphasizes adjusting technique the applied art of chiropractic. Palmer students receive extensive experience in the most efficacious techniques and are well schooled in adjusting.

Basic Sciences

The Palmer College of Chiropractic Division of Basic Sciences teaches the disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology and Public Health.

Basic Sciences comprise approximately 99 of the 308 credit hours (about one third) of the curriculum, which is equivalent to 1,485 contact hours. Sections and extra lab hours have been created to maintain classes with a smaller student/faculty ratio.

Currently, there are approximately 15 faculty members in the Division. Faculty members hold academic degrees appropriate to their respective disciplines. In addition, two laboratory technicians/coordinators provide necessary support and assist in maintaining the quality of the laboratory experience.

Chiropractic Sciences

The Division of Chiropractic Sciences comprises four disciplines: Diagnosis, Radiology, Technique and Chiropractic Protocol. Together these four areas are responsible for teaching approximately 50 percent of the curriculum, including the preclinical and clinical courses.

There are approximately 40 faculty members in the Chiropractic Science Division. The majority of our faculty have D.C. degrees and have practiced or are actively practicing. Additional academic degrees held include Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.s.

The Chiropractic Science faculty of Palmer College are recognized as among the finest in all of chiropractic education. Over the entrance to the Palmer Chiropractic Main Clinic is one of B.J. Palmer's epigrams, "Enter to Learn How." As you leave the Clinic, you see another of his sayings, "Go Forth to Serve." Faculty of the Chiropractic Sciences Division are dedicated to teaching you how  to serve once you go forth from the College.

Philosophy

The depth of philosophical tradition, dating back to D.D. Palmer, sets Palmer College of Chiropractic apart from other chiropractic colleges. The wholistic approach to total health, dating back to the Greek philosopher Hippocrates, often called the Father of Medicine, has always been central to chiropractic philosophy. Rather than emphasizing removal of symptoms, e.g., pain or disability in body parts, chiropractic focuses on keeping the whole body at its optimum functioning. Ideally, the chiropractor would intervene before disease processes gain the upper hand. The doctor of chiropractic concentrates on prevention and wellness, concepts growing in appeal as health care costs skyrocket.

More and more people are interested in actively preventing disease. Chiropractic's wholistic approach has always embraced prevention through regular chiropractic adjustments, nutrition, exercise and overall wellness, and this health care system involves applied science. Doctors of Chiropractic receive similar training in biology, anatomy and physiology and even study some of the same scientific textbooks as medical doctors.
