Adopt-A-Class Program

This program's goal is to provide an environment for an exposure of chiropractic students to successful field Doctors of Chiropractic. We hope this program helps to fill a niche in the chiropractic educational process -- role modeling and a first-hand resource for how a chiropractic practice is maintained.

To Apply For Participation

  1. First, as a D.C. volunteering for this program, bear in mind that commitment is long, more than three years with the trimester program. To help reduce this load for the D.C., we are introducing the "Adopt-A-Class" Team, which will allow multiple chiropractors to be involved with a single class. We feel the optimal number for the team would be two to three doctors.
  2. Send a letter to the Palmer College of Chiropractic Alumni Office, attention to Lois Peterson, expressing your interest in the program. Enclose a copy of your curriculum vitae or biographical sketch for our files. You will be approved for the program by an Alumni Adopt-A-Class Committee and notified by mail of the decision of the committee. All travel, room and board are your own responsibility.
  3. Upon approval, we will place you on the assignment list. It may take a few trimesters before we are able to assign you to a class due to the number of alumni who are participating. Don't be discouraged! If you have a spouse or child who will be enrolling for a certain trimester, we will make every attempt to have you on the team assigned to that particular class.
  4. If you have any questions or need assistance, please call us at (800) PCC-ALUM, ext. 3. The staff administrator for the program is Lois Petersen.

General Guidelines

The following are only general guidelines concerning your participation with your class. They are considered the minimum responsibilities for your involvement.

  1. The Adopt-A-Class Team (all or part) should meet with the class a minimum of twice during the calendar year. We can arrange for one classroom exposure during each trimester. Meetings or social gatherings outside of the classroom may occur as many times as you and the class so desire.
  2. You are expected to attend and, perhaps, provide assistance for the four major events of classes that are as follows:
  1. Half-way party
  2. Clinic Badge Presentation Ceremony
  3. Pre-Graduation Cocktail Party
  4. Graduation Ceremony and Social Functions; e.g., Banquet
  1. A letter will be sent to you approximately one month before the new trimester begins advising you of the dates for that trimester. When you have decided on a date(s), please call Lois Petersen and she will arrange with instructors to set up classes. We would appreciate a three- to four-week notice, as this can be a timely process of selecting classes and getting answers from the instructors. You will be notified as soon as your schedule is set up.
  2. It is expected that you will make yourself available at least to the class officers for consultation and direction. You may indicated the guidelines under which this communication occurs.
  3. As the student progresses through the educational program at Palmer, the input from the Alumni Adopt-A-Class Team can generally be thought of as occurring in three broad phases. Initially, the student needs information concerning what a Doctor of Chiropractic is and is not. While they need chiropractic philosophy throughout the program, it is very important that they get this exposure initially from the alumni. As education progresses they become interested in the practice of chiropractic, particularly as they enter the clinical sciences portion of the curriculum and prepare for their clinic service in the Palmer Chiropractic Clinics. In the last year of their education, they become increasingly concerned with experiences in the field as a new practioner and how to set up a practice. These three broad topic areas should only be used as guidelines for your consideration.

Summary

The student body appreciates the interest and exposure to the field practioner of chiropractic. The program is as successful as we, the alumni, make it. The above items are only general guidelines to help you get started. Please relay your experiences to the Palmer College Alumni Office. We appreciate constructive ideas to strengthen or modify the program. If you need support in implementing ideas during your service as an Alumni Adopt-A-Class team member, please let us know.
