Preceptorship Programs

Intern Preceptorship Program:

The Intern Preceptorship Program is an optional, off-campus program for students in their last trimester. It allows an opportunity for an extern to gain experience with a Doctor of Chiropractic at their private practice setting. Through a mentorship-type relationship with the licensed chiropractor, the intern has an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the everyday management of a private practice. Depending on the location of the preceptorship, interns may perform a variety of patient care procedures under the direct supervision of the licensed chiropractor. While an ideal preceptorship would allow the intern to perform chiropractic adjustments, examinations and X-rays, state regulations may limit intern performance to the duties that a chiropractic assistant would perform or to observations only.

Program Objectives:

  • To provide the College with a setting beyond the campus  clinics for a highly practical clinical experience as a preparation program for entry level professionals;

  • To provide an opportunity for chiropractors in the field to serve the profession and cooperate in the preparation of entry level professionals;

  • To provide an avenue of communication between the Palmer Chiropractic Clinics and chiropractors in the field;

  • To provide students with experiences that will enable them to gain a more complete understanding and development of their clinical skills;

  • To provide students with a practical experience upon which to plan and build their private chiropractic practice in the future;

  • To provide students with a professional setting in which to practice the knowledge and skills they have attained during their course and clinical work;

  • To provide students with a setting which allows them the opportunity to discover their professional strengths and weaknesses.

Graduate Preceptor Program:

The Graduate Preceptor Program provides an opportunity for Palmer College graduates to work in a chiropractic practice while waiting to attain chiropractic licensure in their state. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed chiropractor, unlicensed graduates are provided an opportunity to continue enhancement of their clinical training and to gain valuable insight into the daily management of a chiropractic practice. Palmer College graduates may participate in this program for a period of up to one year following their graduation or until a state license is obtained, whichever should occur first. Due to state regulations, this opportunity is not available in all states.
