PHSL Special Collections & Archives Services

PHSL's Special Collections, with more than 9,000 books and 2,500 journal volumes, is considered the most comprehensive chiropractic historical resource in the world. Chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, and other non-drug and non-surgical health sciences materials are collected but do not circulate.

The Archives Collection contains more than 2,700 cubic feet of manuscripts, photographs and college records. The highlights of these two collections are the manuscript and paper collections of:

  • D.D. Palmer, the Founder of Chiropractic and what is now called Palmer College of Chiropractic;
  • B.J. Palmer, son of D.D. and President of the Palmer School of Chiropractic from 1906-1961;
  • David D. Palmer, son of B.J. and Mabel Heath Palmer, President of Palmer College of Chiropractic from 1961-1978;
  • Kenneth Cronk, long-time Palmer faculty member; Lyndon Lee, a chiropractic pioneer from New York; and Russell Gibbons, a prominent chiropractic historian

ORAL HISTORIES:  Click on 'oral histories' for a list of oral histories of chiropractors, or of people closely connected with chiropractic that have been identified by the Special Services division of the David D. Palmer Library. Most are owned by the Palmer College, and others are available from other sources.

The grid names the narrator, the interviewer, the date of the interview, where and when the narrator graduated, and whether or not the tapes have been transcribed.  For help in accessing the interviews please contact the Special Services division of the David D. Palmer Library at 563-884-5893 or email Wiese_G@palmer.edu.

For an index to online full text oral histories from other institutions, go to In the First Person: Index to Letters, Diaries, Oral
Histories, and Other Personal Narratives.

PALMER GREEN BOOKS: From 1906 to 1963 the Palmer School of Chiropractic published a set of textbooks emphasizing chiropractic technique and philosophy. The 39 volumes have become highly collectible, with those written by B.J. Palmer commanding the highest prices. For a complete bibliography of the Palmer Green Books click on the above link.
Special Collections offers access to its collection and reference assistance services Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Literature searches on historical questions are performed as time permits. Photocopies of materials from the collection are available within copyright restrictions. Document delivery fees apply.

B.J. Palmer Audiocassettes

PHSL has recently added a new set of B.J. Palmer audiocassettes to its AV Collection. The 32-tape set, A Collection of Lectures by B.J. Palmer, is a digitally re-mastered set of lectures B.J. presented between 1951 and 1959. To allow for more access to these tapes, PHSL has divided the large set down into 14 parts. Each part is processed in its own case so that it can be checked out separately. Look for these tapes in the AV Collection on the 2nd floor with this call number: AV RZ 245 SC 311. 24 September 2001
