Palmer Health Sciences Library Services

Like comprehensive libraries worldwide, the Palmer Health Sciences Library offers several services that are helpful for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Quad-City community. Below are details about the services and resources available.

Reference Services & Literature Searches

Library faculty are available to assist patrons with: using and finding Palmer Health Sciences Library electronic and print resources, recommending databases, and evaluating other information resources. The primary purpose of the Reference Department is to guide students, faculty, staff, and researches to resources that accelerate the process of identifying and retrieving information for study, research, or personal use. A fee-based literature search service is available to Palmer Alumni and other remote users.

Alumni Services

Palmer Health Sciences Library offers many services to Palmer Alumni including literature searches, document delivery, and other reference services. For more information on alumni services, please call the Reference desk at (563) 884-5896 or visit: Alumni Services.

Circulation Services

The typical check-out length of library materials for Palmer students is two weeks and requires your valid Palmer identification card. Some users, such as faculty and graduate students,  have different circulation privileges.
Citizens of the Quad Cities community may check out library materials from the collection. To check out materials, patrons must have either a valid college identification (ID) card from a Quad Cities area college or a River Bend Library System affiliated library card.

Reserve Services

The basic circulation period for the Reserves Collection is two hours and requires your valid Palmer ID card. Patrons in the  Quad Cities community may also check out library materials from the collection. To check out materials, you must have either a valid college ID card from a Quad Cities area college or a River Bend Library System affiliated library card.

Interlibrary Loan Services

Books and journal articles not held by Palmer Health Sciences Library may be obtained from any number of library resources sharing networks of which Palmer Health Sciences Library is a member. Many of these Interlibrary Loan networks are nationwide. The service fee for articles for faculty and students is $2.00 per request, books are no charge. This service requires at least two weeks for obtaining borrowed materials.

Document Delivery Services

Document Delivery is available only to off-campus, Palmer alumni and other health care providers. The cost of service to alumni is $12/article plus copyright royalties. The cost for non-Palmer alumni is $15/article plus copyright royalties. If requested materials are on the shelf, typically they are mailed the next working day. If a rush delivery is necessary, it may be faxed within the day for an extra charge of $1.00 per page.

Copying Services

A photocopy service is available for materials that are subscribed by Palmer Health Sciences Library. Fees for this service are $4.00 per request  for on campus Palmer faculty. For assistance, please call (563) 884-5641.

Audio-Visual Services

The Library maintains a large audio-visual room (Library, 2nd floor) with video players/monitors and slide projector/screens for viewing the programs in its collection. The room is available anytime the library is open on a first-come, first-serve basis. The room may also be used for group study when it is not being used for viewing audio-visual software.

Acquisition Services

The Acquisitions Department (Library, 3rd floor) is responsible for ordering books, audio-visual, and multimedia materials for the library's various collections.  Materials are chosen in accordance with PHSL's Collection Development Policy. Suggestions for additions to the collection may be sent to the Library to Phyllis Harvey, 563-884-5529.

Cataloging and Processing Services

Cataloging and Processing are responsible for the organization of materials within the Library. All monographs, periodicals and audiovisuals acquired by PHSL are cataloged according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second revised edition, and are classed according to the Library of Congress (LC) Classification Schedules. Palmer Health Sciences Library assigns LC Subject Headings, supplemented with those from a local list, "Chiropractic Subject Headings List," to all materials. T
