A.V.I.D. students visit Florida Campus
1/31/2011 (Archived)
Fifty students from
Heritage Middle School in Deltona, Fla., near Port Orange, toured the Florida
Campus on Jan. 7. The seventh and eighth graders are all members of Advancement
Via Individual Determination (A.V.I.D.). A.V.I.D. students are the first
generation within a family with the intent and goal of entering college. Many
are from low-income families and all are enrolled in advanced classes with the
expectation of participation in honors classes when they reach high school. By
the time these students enter high school, they will have visited a total of
eight colleges and been exposed to many different career choices. The campus
visit is one of several scheduled for 2011 by Florida Campus Admissions
Coordinator Susan Juliano.
A.V.I.D. students on the Florida Campus wore T-shirts bearing the
Ghandi quote, "Become the change you wish to see in the world."
