Sandbag volunteers appeal from City of Davenport - March 27
3/23/2011 (Archived)
A message from the
Downtown Davenport Partnership:
With record-level flooding predicted for the
Quad-Cities area in the coming days, the City of Davenport is seeking volunteers
to help fill sandbags for flood protection in the city’s downtown area. If you
wish to take part in this effort, further information is included in the
following letter from Davenport’s Downtown Partnership Board.
The City of Davenport sand bagging efforts are fully
underway with volunteers filling nearly 16,000 sandbags this past weekend;
however, this is far short of the anticipated need of more than 100,000 sand
bags. Since one of the main efforts of the City’s flood fight centers on
downtown Davenport it’s natural that the Downtown Partnership have a role.
Plans are rapidly
evolving for the Downtown Partnership to host a sand bagging effort this Sunday,
March 27, from noon to 5 p.m. in the RiverCenter South. This effort will
supplement the City’s main effort at the public works facility. Free pizza will
be supplied by Antonella’s, cold beer by the Great
River Brewery , music by Ellis Kell and others. We’d like to extend a big
thank you to the DP’s very own Rick Palmer for making all of this possible by
allowing the use of the RiverCenter (on very short notice) and arranging for a
sound system. The city will supply all of the equipment necessary and have
personnel on site to manage the equipment.
We need your help. Please show your community spirit
by giving some of your time on Sunday to help out the effort. The City of
Davenport has canceled any leave for all City employees during this “all hands
on deck effort”, all of the DP staff will be on hand, and we’d like to have a
good showing of DP board members.
We hope to see as many of you as possible this Sunday.
See our website and/or Facebook page for additional details.
