Operation Palmer Promotes Play (OP3) was first organized in 2012 by a group of student leaders looking to add a fun, rewarding challenge to a rigorous study curriculum, as well as a way to give back to the community. Today, OP3 continues to grow from support gained through student clubs, professional organizations, Greek houses as well as numerous faculty and staff at Palmer and the community at large. We anticipate OP3 to grow and engage more students on campus each year while inspiring others in the community.
Our Dream Playground
Summary of Fundraising Goal
The build took place on September 28, 2013
The first phase of this project is to break ground at Sister Concetta Park. Prior to the designated workday, the ground was professionally re-graded to no more than a 2% incline. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, Palmer students helped to lay the sod creating a sports field for children to play team sports and promote aerobic activity; The Palmer students continue to help with the watering of the new sod. All the Palmer organizations and clubs on campus worked hard to complete the fundraising goal of $17,000.
The second phase of this project is to build a tree-shaded patio around an existing water fountain where children can gather for healthy meals and snacks. This patio may also be used as a stage where the children perform creative works. The Duncan J. Cameron Family Foundation has made a pledge of $14,000 to cover Phase II! This build will take place in the spring of 2014 and construction will be completed by Aunt Rhodies Landscape and Design Studios. A dedication ceremony is planned for Saturday, April 12, 2014.
The third phase goal is to provide new, safe playground equipment that promotes physical strength, stability and endurance exercises and will encourage children to play longer and more often. All of the new playground equipment has been specifically chosen because it can be incorporated in regular obstacle courses Project Renewal assembles to engage the children in physical fitness. With the addition of the playground equipment, it also is necessary to install rubber turf under the equipment that is designed to meet stringent requirements for playground fall safety. The turf not only resembles green grass that will blend in beautifully with the new sod, but it is created from recycled rubber, diverting waste from landfills. The turf is safe, non-toxic, slip resistant, low maintenance, tear-resistant and porous to allow free drainage. This portion makes up $25,000, or 39% of the budget
