As part of its strategic plan, the College is taking bold steps to continue the renovation and revitalization of its historic main campus in Davenport, Iowa
The most recent phase of this revitalization was focused on the north end of the campus. It included:
- A new campus gateway
- West Hall-Courtyard improvements
- Renovated and enhanced Clinic Gardens
- A transformation of the former Alumni Auditorium into a modern Athletic & Recreation Center
The northwest gateway, located at the corner of Main Street and Palmer Drive is the new main entrance to campus for visitors, students, faculty and staff who come to campus from the north.
The gateway includes a multi-level plaza and a 30-foot monument with the Palmer crest.
The West Hall Courtyard connects the Palmer Family Residence, the current Alumni Auditorium and Friendship Court and is a main thoroughfare and meeting space for students, faculty and staff.
This project maintained the existing design while making the space more welcoming and accessible. Specifically, it softened the architecture by adding trees and landscaping, and provides more comfortable spaces for study and relaxation.
The historic Clinic Gardens have been enhanced with new landscaping, restored fountains and a clearer view of this beautiful space from Brady Street, while preserving the garden’s historic artifacts that make this space so special to the Palmer community.
R. Richard Bittner Athletic & Recreation Center
A skywalk now connects B.J. Palmer Hall to an enclosed courtyard. That courtyard in turn connects to the most prominent component of this phase of the campus revitalization, the state-of-the-art R. Richard Bittner Athletic & Recreation center.
The former Alumni Auditorium was built in 1970 and was designed to house large assemblies and a recreation facility. Its use has changed many times as the demand for more recreational space has grown.
This modernization project has resulted in a complete renovation, which is essential for recruiting and retaining students.
The project included:
- Site and façade improvements
- All existing recreational spaces were updated
- Additions include:
- A multi-lane track on the second level
- Enhanced aerobic facilities
- Enhanced free-weight and weight-machine areas
We’re confident this renovated facility will quickly become an iconic addition supporting the healthy lifestyle of today’s students and employees. It also will serve as a key selling point to prospective students and their families.
