Palmer student profile: Sinan Gocmen

7/30/2013 (Archived)

Sinan Gocmen (Freeport, Ill.) is a 10th trimester student on Palmer’s Davenport Campus. Not only has Sinan worked hard as a chiropractic student, he’s also worked hard to qualify for the 2013 CrossFit Games, an annual worldwide competition to “determine the Fittest on Earth™.”

Sinan Gocmen, Davenport studentHow does an athlete qualify for the CrossFit Games (which were held July 22-28)?

Sinan: There is a qualification process that is world-wide starting with the CrossFit Games Open. Doing well in the Open qualifies you for Regionals. Placing among the top three in the region earns you a ticket to the Games. There is an individual male, female and team division. The top three men, women and teams from Regionals continue on to the Games to represent their respective regions.

As a future chiropractor, how important is physical fitness to you?

Sinan: Physical fitness is very important to me. I've spent two to three hours a day training, not only to stay in shape but to also be ready for the Games. This is my second year in a row qualifying for the CrossFit Games with my teammates from QuadCity CrossFit (QCCF). QCCF is the original and largest CrossFit gym in the Quad Cities with locations in both Davenport and Moline. Several of the coaches also help with Palmer's Functional Fitness Club.

How would you describe your experience as a Palmer student?

Sinan: Being a student at Palmer has been a unique, life-changing experience. I'm no stranger to hard work and putting in the time to get job done, and the curriculum at Palmer has challenged me unlike any other educational endeavor I've undertaken.

What has been the most valuable to you in your education?

Sinan: Most valuable in my education at Palmer has been building solid relationships with fellow classmates and working with the faculty to be prepared for what lies ahead after graduation.

What advice do you have for a student considering chiropractic as a career?

Sinan: If you're looking for a challenge that's only surpassed by it's rewards, stop looking because the curriculum (at Palmer) will challenge you. And the lives you will impact will be a blessing.
