Eighteen graduates received their Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degrees at Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus Summer Quarter 2013 commencement on Sept. 13 in the theater of the Santa Clara Convention Center.
Heather McDowell (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada) and Benjamin Imagire (Custer, South Dakota) graduated as class valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.
McDowell graduated with Cum Laude academic honors (3.50-3.69), and was also recognized for her selection to Palmer’s West Campus chapter of the Pi Tau Delta International Chiropractic Honor Society, the oldest and most distinguished honor society in the chiropractic profession.
Carolyn S. O’Meara (Brockville, Ontario, Canada) received the Clinical Excellence Award, which is presented to the graduate who has uniquely distinguished him- or herself during the internship portion of their educational experience at Palmer’s West Campus, and who has performed the tasks of the student doctor with exceptional proficiency in the following categories: patient diagnosis; chiropractic technique; radiography; and case management.
Baljinder Singh Gill (Marysville, Wash.), received the Student Fellow Award. Selected by members of the graduating class, the Student Fellow Award is presented “in recognition of service and leadership while upholding the values of her class, college and profession.”
Jesus Cazares Perez (Stockton, Calif.) received the Virgil V. Strang Philosophy Award, which is selected by a faculty panel, and recognizes a deserving graduate for his or her “distinctive accomplishment and contributions to the philosophical principles of chiropractic as a student at Palmer College’s West Campus.”
Gill and O’Meara also earned special awards for serving as members of the West Campus Guides, a volunteer group of students who serve as ambassadors of Palmer College by conducting campus tours for prospective students and assisting at major College events.
Ciara Cappo (Kunia, Hawaii), Andrew Lopez (Exeter, Calif.), Carolyn O’Meara, and Shannon Snow (Alberta, Canada) earned awards for their service as officers of the West Campus Sports Council.
Gary Schultz, D.C., D.A.C.B.R., presented the commencement address. Dr. Schultz is vice president of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, for the University of Western States, and he also serves as vice president of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology (ACCR).
At the graduation rehearsal a day earlier, Cappo and Gill were recognized for their service as officers of the West Campus student chapter of the American Chiropractic Association, and McDowell received a special award in recognition of achieving Pi Tau Delta honors.
