West Campus alumni Drs. Daniel and Michael Lord help Oracle Team USA to victory
West Campus alumni Dr. Daniel Lord, ’08, and Dr. Michael Lord, ’10, played a hands-on role in helping Oracle Team USA rebound from a seven-race deficit to defeat Emirates Team New Zealand and win the 2013 America’s Cup title in San Francisco in September.
No, they weren’t members of the 26-member crew that navigated 72-foot catamaran seacraft with 12-story vertical wings, which soared above the waves across the San Francisco Bay on hydrofoils at speeds of nearly 50 miles-per-hour. But the chiropractic care that the two former West Campus Sports Council presidents provided helped to keep the Team USA crew members in top “ship shape” throughout the grueling competition that went the full 17-race distance (as the first to nine is crowned the winner). After falling behind 8-1, the U.S. team recorded eight straight wins, to win the coveted trophy of the oldest international sporting event (established in 1851). The 34th America's Cup was the longest ever Cup by both number of days and races, and the first since the 25th America’s Cup to feature a "winner-takes-all" final race.
Dr. Daniel Lord was appointed to the sports-medicine team last October, and since then has provided weekly care at Oracle Racing Team USA’s training headquarters in San Francisco, in addition to race-day services. Both Daniel and Michael were members of the sports-medicine team that provided care for the U.S. sailing crew throughout the competition period, which spanned from July to September.
Dr. Daniel maintains his primary practice as the chiropractor at Facebook’s campus-based health center in Menlo Park, Calif.; Dr. Michael (a Board member of the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council, and medical coordinator at the Sea Otter Classic cycling festival since 2009) practices at Avanzaré Chiropractic Sport Therapy in San Francisco.
