Present:  Susan Burns, Karen Goodell, Ruth Hall, Phyllis Harvey, Natalee Hattig, Dennis Peterson

Meeting Time:  10:08 a.m. – 10:58 a.m.

Aim for Meeting

  • Approved minutes of January13, 2005 and January 20, 2005.

Updates from Library Faculty
Professor Peterson – Director

·         Completed revision of CLIBCON library statistics form.

·         Telephone conversation with Eileen Burg, Information and Instruction Librarian, Palmer Florida Library regarding personnel issues.

·         Enrollment is strong at the Florida campus with 405 students now enrolled.

·         The Student Assessment of Faculty for the Library 110 class will be conducted on February 8, 2005 and February 10, 2005.

·         The ACRL assessment review retreat will be at St. Ambrose possibly next Friday, February 4, 2005. 

Assistant Professor Burns - Cataloging

  • Completed cataloging on the first Anglo European theses and will catalog one or two a week.
  • Continuing to work on open entry titles, directories and Michigan Journals.
  • Would it be possible to use the donation account money to purchase books.  Mr. Peterson will check whether this is feasible.

Instructor Goodell - Information & Instruction

·         Working on Syllabus and new course book for next trimester of Library 110 class.

·         Will be teaching another graduate research class with Dr. Hondras in the Research Department.  They are inviting other Research faculty to attend this class.

·         Last assignment was given the Library 110 class for this trimester.

Assistant Professor Hall - Cataloging & Processing

·         Ms. Wheeler, Cataloging Technician is troubleshooting and creating records on ordering in Horizon.  It will show on Horizon if an item is on order or if it has been received.

·         Continuing to work with Ms. Peters, Collection Management on previewing audio visuals.

·         The January 6, 2005 BCR workshop on Cataloging: CD-ROMS, Multimedia and Software in Iowa City has been rescheduled for March 10, 2005.

Associate Professor Harvey – Acquisitions, Serials and Electronic Resources

·         Along with Instructor Goodell, Information Literacy, a PALS workshop entitled “First Search Administrative Module” at Coal Valley, IL on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 

·         Received 24 free books from the National Library of Medicine.

·         Time was spent working on new program for Index for Chiropractic Literature.

·         Working with EBSCO on the paper and online subscriptions for the British Medical Journal.  We are only receiving a paper copy as of today.

·         If there are webpage linking problems, please contact Associate Professor Harvey.

·         Instructor Goodell and Associate Professor Harvey will coordinate as to distributing username/password information to the March trimester new students.

·         Discussed the acquisitions budget is nearly all expended for FY 2005, discussion on additional funding for chiropractic materials followed.

·         The Help Desk ticket to Information Services was submitted regarding the reference are workstations  bumping students out of searches before the searches are completed.

Instructor Hattig – Access

·         Recommendations web-subject guide resource links for PHSL’s webpage would be appreciated.

·         Competed Circulation training for the night staff and will do the day staff training today, also distributed appropriate hand outs from Associate Professor Harvey, and Instructor Goodell, Information Literacy.

·         Attended a teleconference with Instructor Goodell, Information Literacy at the Davenport Public Library on “Dealing with Difficult People” on Friday, January 21, 2005.

·         Will meet with Mike Rekemeyer, Marketing and Communications regarding PHSL homepage design.

Professor Wiese - Special Collections & Archives

  • Will be attending ACE Bargaining Unit sessions all day next Monday and Tuesday.
  • Received an interesting reference question regarding the history of Chiropractic in Norway.
  • Received a telephone call from a contractor from the British Archives seeking information on the Special Collection recordgraph machine. The British Archives is working on a project to transfer newscasts and war time trials that are on the recordgraph to a digital format. Through a Google search, they identified our recordgraph project to request information about its process. Reportedly, Palmer has one of only five known machines working today. 
  • Library Assistant Culley Smith has edit a new version of the Palmer Health Sciences Library Special Services brochure which is sent along with donation letters.

Discussion points

  • Discussion on the reference computers and the problems  patron searching interruptions.
  • Discussion of the Spring trimester orientation schedule for Library faculty.

 Action Steps for Library Faculty

  • Associate Professor Harvey to check on help desk ticket for the reference computers.
  • Director Peterson to check on data projector from Center for Teaching and Learning for the assessment review retreat.

Aim for Next Week's Meeting

  • Approval of Minutes.
  • Forward Agenda items to Mr. Peterson.
  • Continued discussion on specified points.
