New Edition of the Nexus Online

Gustav Dubbs Papers

The Special Collections area of the David D. Palmer Health Sciences Library is pleased to announce the gift of personal papers belonging to Gustave Dubbs, D.C.  Dr. Dubbs, a graduate of the Lincoln Chiropractic College (1949) and the Atlantic States Chiropractic Institute (1951), was the National Director of Comprehensive Health Planning, Director of the Chiropractic Health Planning Program, Chairman of the Community Mental Health at Meadowbrook Hospital, Board member of the Florida State Chiropractic Society and of the National Health Federation.  His papers include decades of correspondence and press releases. Also included are, Anti-Chiropractic releases by the A.M.A., struggles with the A.M.A. and various lawsuits such as Dubbs vs. A.M.A. and the A.M.A. Libel Suit.  Dr. Dubbs’ papers have been processed and are available for research in the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5pm.  Limited distance research services are also available.  Please call 563-884-5893 or email Wiese_G@palmer.edu for more information.                                                                                                                                                   Nov 2006


Site License to JAMA

A site license has been arranged for all three campuses to JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association.  The access to the journal is available through a link in the A-Z eJournals List on the left side of all three library home pages.  Access is available from 1998 to present.  If you have any questions or problems with access, please contact Phyllis Harvey at the Davenport campus.                                                                                                                                         Oct 2006


Citations on Best Practices and Evidence-Based Practice

Assistant Professor Karen Goodell has prepared a list of citations for individuals interested in learning more about the concepts of best practices and evidence-based practice and how they are being used in chiropractic practice.  This list is not intended to be comprehensive, but to give you an overview of the concepts and current issues.  If you have more questions about best practices or evidence-based practice and how they may affect patient care, please contact the library at referencedesk@palmer.edu or 563-884-5896.                                                                                                         Oct 2006


Book Sale

The library currently has a number of books and VHS tapes for sale.   While most of the materials deal with health topics, there are also some Hollywood movies and novels.  Many items are prices less than a dollar.  Come by the library today and see what is for sale.  The materials can be found on the third floor beside the Reference collection.                  Oct 2006


Food/Drink Policy and Cellphone Use Policy

As the new term begins, the Palmer Health Sciences Library would like to reiterate its Food and Drink Policy. No food may be consumed in the library. Food in sealed containers may be brought into, but not consumed in, the library. Drinks in approved containers may be consumed on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the library. No drinks may be consumed in Special Collections on the 1st Floor of the library. Approved containers include spill-proof mugs with sturdy lids and water bottles with screw-on tops. Non-approved containers include aluminum cans, glass bottles, uncovered mugs, and paper or Styrofoam containers (covered or uncovered). Noncompliant individuals will be asked to take the food/drink out of the library. Noncompliant food/drink that is unattended will be confiscated and discarded. Chronic non-compliance may result in student ethics charges. If you have any questions about these policies, please contact the library.

The Palmer Health Sciences Library would also like to announce its Cellphone Use Policy. Cellphone ringers must be muted upon entering the library. Please leave the library in order to make or receive calls. If necessary, calls may be received while inside the library, but please move outside as soon as possible. Individuals with unmuted ringers will be asked to mute them. Individuals talking on cellphones within the library will be asked to move outside. Chronic non-compliance may result in student ethics charges. If you have any questions about these policies, please contact the library.


Wellness Subject Guide

In recognition of the inclusion of "Wellness" competencies on the Council on Chiropractic Education Standards for Doctor of Chiropractic Programs, the Library has begun work on a Wellness subject guide.  This subject guide will contain links and citations to resources that cover the challenges to wellness and ways to meet these challenges and promote health.  We welcome any suggestions that you might have for resources and ask that you please send them to referencedesk@palmer.edu.
