Academic Services

The Counseling Department provides Academic Support, and opportunities for enhanced learning for all Palmer College of Chiropractic students.  Our department provides assistance with Academic Advising, Alternate Schedules, and serves as student advocates with other departments.  We also understand that to perform best in your classes, you may need assistance outside the classroom,  or effective study skills to lay the foundation for current and future classes.  With that in mind, we have developed an array of Academic Services to help you meet your educational goals:

Academic Counseling

Academic Counseling assists students in understanding and adapting to the academic challenges of chiropractic education. Our goal is to help students develop skills and strategies that contribute to a successful and satisfying educational experience. Academic Counselors are available to clarify the college's academic policies, practices and procedures. The counselors can also discuss with students a variety of academic options and policies, including:

  • the criteria for satisfactory academic progress
  • minimum requirements for financial aid eligibility
  • curriculum management plans
  • Individualized Curricular schedule options to the 10th trimester, 29 to 30 credits per trimester curricular structure
  • information about on-campus academic support services
  • assistance with general questions regarding the academic program and how to access services
  • advice about preparation and planning for National Board Exams

Academic Counseling also works with students individually to help identify more efficient or effective study strategies. Counselors can also provide suggestions for how to optimize the educational benefits of the chiropractic curriculum and more fully engage the resources available to students. Online academic support brochures are available for students at the Self-Help Study Skills link.

Palmer Counseling Services is an expression of the concept of holistic experience whereby all dimensions of experience are connected. Thus, difficulties in one aspect of a person’s experience can manifest and affect other areas of a person’s life. Likewise, success and strength in one aspect of experience can be directed toward other aspects of experience. The realities of being a chiropractic student can make it challenging to maintain one’s overall well being. Counseling Services complements chiropractic, assisting students in the goal of optimizing one’s level of functioning. Students are encouraged to speak with Academic Counselors about strategies for being well while engaged in the process of preparing themselves to be wellness-care providers. Online wellness brochures are available at the Self-Help Wellness link.

Individual Curricular Schedule

Success in the ten-trimester curriculum requires excellent time management skills, solid preparation in the basic sciences and effective study strategies. Many students find they are able to maximize educational and personal benefits of the program by taking less than the 29-31 credits that are necessary to complete the curriculum in ten trimesters. Taking fewer credits per term and extending the length of the curriculum to eleven or twelve trimesters allows students a variety of benefits:

  • time and energy to spend with spouses and/or children and significant others
  • time and energy to participate in co-curricular activities on and off campus
  • time to more thoroughly study and master course content
  • time to attend to personal growth and wellness
  • Three Individual Curricular schedules (ICS) have been developed that reduce the number of credits per trimester through the basic sciences portion of the curriculum, where students tend to have the most difficulty. These three schedules meet the requirements for full-time student status, and maintain financial aid eligibility. If you are interested in taking a reduced number of credits and would like to discuss the ICS contact:  Lori Newman, Ph.D. or Lisa Mestad, D.C.
