Palmer remembers Dr. Gilbert Schmiedel

Dr. Schmiedel sits at the judging table with the other talent show judges during Homecoming years ago.Longtime Davenport campus professor, Gilbert O. Schmiedel, D.C., (Main, ’59), died Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. Dr. Schmiedel was a beloved Palmer faculty member for 48 years, serving Palmer College and its students from 1963 to 2011. He also served as the faculty adviser to the Student Council for many years.

Aside from his time teaching and advising students, Dr. Schmiedel will be remembered for the fun hats he wore during the annual Homecoming talent show. He wrote about this tradition in his column in the Summer 2007 edition of Insights magazine.

“Just being around students keeps you young,” Dr. Schmiedel wrote in the column. “One of the things that has given me much joy as a faculty member is being active with student groups …. It has been my pleasure to serve [students] over the years.”
