West students earn 1st, 2nd Place awards at 2017 ACA Sports Council Symposium

Palmer College’s leadership in the field of sports-chiropractic was on display, once again, at the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council’s annual Symposium, held Oct. 13-14, in Denver, Colorado. During the Symposium, West students won awards for their research-posters, and West alumni were among the featured speakers.

West students Mark O’Brien and Kristin Freitas earned 1st Place honors in the 8th annual “ACA Sports Council Student Poster Scholarship Competition” for the production of their poster on the study of the effects of a cervical adjustment on static balance.

O’Brien and Freitas received “The Hyde Award,” which is presented to the 1st Place winner, along with $2,000.

Michael Klein, past president of the West Sports Council, earned 2nd Place honors for his case report of a post-acute stroke patient. He also received a cash prize of $1,000.

In addition to producing the printed poster (at 48- x 36-inch dimensions), content-participants are also required to submit a one-page summary that provides an overview of their poster-focus. Additionally, poster-entrants must attend the Symposium, and present a three- to four-minute summary of their research.

Symposium seminar-sessions featured West alumni Ti Pence, D.C., CCSP® (‘06), faculty-clinician at the Palmer Chiropractic Clinics in San Jose, and Rhiannon Dickison, D.C., CCSP® (‘11), chiropractor for Premise Health at Google’s campus in Mountain View, whose presentation focused on “PATTERN Functional Adjusting Upper Extremity-Bridging the Gap Between Chiropractic Adjusting and Functional Movement.” Ed Le Cara, D.C. (West ’99), who maintains a practice at KinetikChain Denver, discussed “Utilizing Movement Screening in the Sports Medicine Setting.”

In addition to the poster-award winners, other current West Sports Council officers who attended the Symposium included Korissa Ramage, Kyle Siskar, Molly Sparks and Shantiai Watson.

“This was the first year that students from Palmer’s West Campus were awarded first and second prizes in the Symposium poster-competition,” said Ed Feinberg, D.C., DACBSP, and faculty adviser to the Sports Council at Palmer’s West campus since its founding in 1994. “Since I am among those who organize the competition, I had to tamp down my pride while at the event. But once I arrived back on campus, I was beaming!”

Dr. Feinberg also serves on the ACA Sports Council executive board as Student Sports Council Faculty Liaison. (West ’04 alumnus Andrew Cohen, DC, CCSP®, is the current 1st vice president of the ACA Sports Council.)

“During my years of involvement with the West Sports Council, our students and alumni have achieved many distinguished accomplishments in the specialty field of sports chiropractic,” Dr. Feinberg added. “If the legacy of a teacher is the accomplishments of his/her students, then there is much for which I have to be proud.”
