If you visit Palmer College as a prospective student one of the first people you meet is a Campus Guide. Known for their blue blazers emblazoned with the Palmer crest, they do more than just give campus tours and welcome new students to campus.

The Guides were started in 1959 as a volunteer organization by Palmer students John C. Lawyer, D.C. and John Markey, D.C. Both B.J. Palmer, D.C. and David D. Palmer, D.C. endorsed the idea. Hazel Pharaoh, D.C. coined the name.

We recently sat down with Campus Guide President Faith Swartzendruber to learn more about everything the Guides do for the Palmer campus and community.

Q: What do you want people to know about the Campus Guides?

A: We’re the experts on Campus history and the Palmer Family Residence. Often times we get a “first look” at new changes happening on campus both in the physical space and curricular changes. Guides have the ability to have a huge influence on our future student population.

Q: What makes the Guides different from other clubs on campus?

A: Guides is made up of people with many different backgrounds and interests. Being a Guide helps us develop our public speaking and communication skills, leadership skill and gives us a strong community of alumni, current students and new students.

Q: Are their requirements to join?

A: A willingness to serve Palmer and the student population. Must be in first through fifth trimester and in good academic standing.

Interested in becoming a Campus Guide? They are currently accepting applications through Sunday, Aug. 9. For more information, email IACampusGuides@palmer.edu. Don’t forget to follow the Palmer College of Chiropractic Campus Guides on Facebook!
