As D’Coda Johnson, D.C. (’26) walked across the stage at Palmer College of Chiropractic’s Florida campus, she believed she was closing one chapter and stepping boldly into the next. Moments later, she realized her new beginning was even bigger than she imagined — her partner surprised her with a proposal right after graduation, turning an already momentous day into a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
For the Atlanta native, the timing could not have been more meaningful. The proposal reflected everything her Palmer experience taught her: how to grow with purpose, how to trust her path, and how to build a life rooted in faith, service and balance.
Discovering Chiropractic — and Her Purpose
D’Coda’s journey to chiropractic began at Bethune-Cookman University, where she was pursuing her undergraduate degree. While searching for internship opportunities, she connected with a local chiropractor — a Palmer graduate — who offered her a chance that would change her life.
“I knew very little about chiropractic before that internship,” she says. “But after my first adjustment and witnessing the profound impact chiropractic care had on patients’ lives, I knew I had found my calling.”
As her mentor discussed the philosophy of D.D. Palmer, it resonated deeply, particularly the belief in the body’s innate ability to heal when supported properly. That experience illuminated a clear path forward.
Why Palmer Florida
For D’Coda, choosing Palmer was both practical and deeply personal, especially with its close proximity to Bethune-Cookman.
“Palmer is the heart of chiropractic education,” she says. “Its legacy, its history and its commitment to excellence are unmatched.”
Palmer Florida offered a smooth transition from her undergraduate institution, and its location brought both convenience and inspiration. “Having the chance to study in beautiful Florida made the experience even more special.”
A Season of Growth — Personally and Professionally
Throughout her time at Palmer, D’Coda approached every responsibility with intention: her academics, her clinical training and her personal life. She describes her days as structured and disciplined, fueled by purpose and faith.
“Completing my academic requirements required focus and sacrifice,” she says. “That same discipline gave me confidence to pursue personal milestones as well.”
That balance was put beautifully on display during her commencement ceremony. Her partner’s proposal transformed graduation into a celebration of everything she had worked for — and everything she was preparing to build next.
“It reassured me that I could pursue my career, nurture my faith and build a family,” she says. “It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Encouragement for Students Worried About Timing
Many prospective students wonder if they should delay educational or family goals until “the right time.” D’Coda’s message is clear: life does not always unfold on a perfect schedule — and that’s OK.
“There is rarely a ‘perfect’ time,” she says. “What matters most is building a firm foundation spiritually, mentally and emotionally. With discipline, support and faith, both personal and professional growth can coexist.”
She encourages students to focus on clarity, discipline and a strong support system. “The people around you will play a significant role in helping you maintain balance.”
Finding Strength in the Palmer Community
The rigor of Palmer’s curriculum taught D’Coda the importance of time management, communication and grace. And when the journey became overwhelming, her peers, faculty and staff were there to help her keep going.
“I felt safe sharing my experiences with trusted mentors and friends,” she says. “Their encouragement reminded me that even when the journey felt overwhelming, it was not impossible.”
Prepared for Practice — and for Life After Palmer
As she steps into her career, D’Coda feels grounded in the resilience and confidence Palmer helped her build.
“Setbacks are delays, not denials,” she says. “Navigating coursework, boards, clinic responsibilities and personal growth taught me to trust the process.”
Her clinical training, mentorships and life experiences have all shaped her into the doctor she is becoming.
What’s Next
D’Coda plans to begin her career as an associate chiropractor, where she will continue receiving mentorship while refining her clinical skills. At the same time, she is embracing her new role as a mother — a chapter she steps into with gratitude, confidence and joy.
“I’m excited for what’s ahead and committed to building a career rooted in service, excellence and balance,” she says. “I’m grateful to be part of the Palmer legacy.”
